Reading- We have been working on deepening our comprehension skills as readers by making meaningful connections to the texts we are reading. The students are practicing making connections and remembering to bring their connections back to the books (BTB) or texts that they are reading.
Writing- In Writer's Workshop we are currently in the revising stage. We are revising for leads, showing not telling and using concluding sentences. Next week we will edit our writing entries which will take us one step closer to publishing!
Math- WOW! We are learning some really challenging addition strategies. We have learned three new ways to add besides the traditional way. So far we have practiced addition using a hundreds chart, adding by using partial sums, and lastly today we learned a type of adding called compensation. It was really challenging, but we are so excited about it!
Here is an example for you:
99+53 can be added easier mentally if you trade a 1 from the 53 and give it to 99. This makes the new number sentence 100+52.
Science- In the Science Lab we have been discussing the properties of matter. We tested the bounce-ability of four different types of balls. We used a tennis ball, a golf ball, a wooden ball and a ping pong ball. We made our predictions and then completed two trials of tests. You would be surprised to find out which one bounces the highest. Ask your child to share the results with you at home!
Social Studies- This week for Where in the World is Mrs. Maione the students once again read clues to figure out where Mrs. Maione visited. Here are the clues for this week:
1. I'm in
2. I'm on an island.
3. I'm north of the
4. I'm east of Alaska.
5. I'm south of Melville Island.
Do you know where Mrs. Maione visited?
