Plant Life Cycle

In the science lab we are experimenting what will happen to these seeds. We wanted to know if they would sprout without any soil. Guess what? They did!

Plant Tic_Tac-Toe
Each student in the classroom got to predict which three plants in a row will sprout first. We made our predictions, watered and waited to see which three in a row would sprout first.  The winning row was peas, corn and beets!

These are some of the students that are planting their own plants. Each student had chance to grow peas or green beans.

These are some of the plants after they were planted. Each plant is next to the window so the plants will get enough sunlight.

Our class also did an experiment to see which plants would survive, without
the things that they need to live such as; sunlight, air, water and soil. One had no air, one had no water, one with soda, one with sand, and one with no light! We also used a control that had everything it needed.

Would you believe that all the plants grew? Even the one without water! Mrs. Oddo our science teacher told us that we must have had a lot of water in the soil we used because normally the seed coat will not crack and the seed will not be able to germinate without water. Even the plant we gave soda grew. However, it was smelly and it grew very slowly. The one with no light grew but it was WHITE! Plants use sunlight to make food through photosynthesis. Plants use chlorophyll to absorb energy through light during this process. It is the chlorophyll that gives plants their green color!

We are were the bloggers for April. (Lila is on the left and Tasnim on the right) We hope you enjoyed reading this blog post.

  4. What a great variety of labs you have done! I am very impressed by your work and your knowledge of the vocabulary terms. My favorite has to be the 'tic tac toe' project! Thanks for sharing!

  5. Dear Lila & Tasnim,

Great blog post! It sounds like your class is filled with scientists making brilliant discoveries. The part I was most surprised by was when the plants grew when you watered them with soda. Even if they were smelly. My 5th grade students learned about photosynthesis this year, I can't believe you are learning about it already in 3rd grade! You must have a wonderful teacher.

    Congratulations on your scientific work!
